Frequently Asked Questions

How are the cost estimates calculated?
We calculate cost estimates by averaging the street prices (minimum and maximum) of all published products in each category from our database. The estimates reflect real product pricing, not theoretical ranges.
Does the calculator include subscription costs?
Yes. For categories where products commonly require or offer optional subscriptions (like cameras and video doorbells), we include the average monthly subscription cost in our estimate.
What does the hub warning mean?
Some smart home devices require a separate hub or bridge to function. When a large percentage of products in a category require a hub, we show a warning so you can factor in the additional cost and complexity.
How does platform compatibility analysis work?
When you select platforms, we show what percentage of products in each category support that platform. This helps you understand how easy it will be to find compatible devices for your chosen ecosystem.
Can I share my calculation?
Yes. Your device selections and platform filters are stored in the URL. Copy the URL and share it with anyone to show them your estimated smart home budget.
How often is the pricing data updated?
Product pricing in our database is verified against manufacturer and retailer sources. We aim to refresh pricing data quarterly to keep estimates accurate.
